October Meeting

Happy October!!!

We are back!!!
The Wetlands Club welcomes another year with new officers and fresh events for the 2018-2019 school year! This past September has already been buzzing with events.

We went on a local wetlands walk at the Sweetwater Wetlands Park, cleaned-up the coast at Cedar Key, planted reef balls for a reef restoration project, and tended to some cypress trees.

This upcoming month, we are going to having Hardin Waddle, PhD as our guest speaker from the USGS. Our next event will be the Great Suwannee River Basin Clean-up on October 20th.

Two SEEP tours this week!

We led two SEEP tours this week!  Local elementary school students learned about wetland soils, water, and plants at our teaching wetland.  We had 30 students on Monday and 55 students on Tuesday!  Thank you to everyone who volunteered - we couldn't do it without you!

Okefenokee and SEEP!

The wetlands club checked out the Okefenokee swamp this weekend! We spent two days canoeing, and saw pitcher plants, sundews, and even baby alligators. If you're interested in our next trip to the Panhandle, email Josh at jrpapacek@ufl.edu

We also led a tour at a teaching wetland this morning.  We taught 30 local fourth graders about wetland soils, water, and plants!

Tumblin' Creek!

The club did a great job with this semester's Tumblin' Creek Cleanup!  We had 14 volunteers and collected 243.5lb of recyclables, 273.7lb of garbage, and 100lb of old tires.  Great job everyone!

Love Wetlands?

Come show your love for wetlands this weekend by helping out with the Tumblin' Creek Cleanup!  It's a great chance to explore a local wetland, get your feet wet, and help out the club!  We'll be meeting at 9am in the parking lot of America's Best Value Inn (1900 SW 13th St, Gainesville, FL 32608), and will be working until noon.  Wear long pants and closed toed shoes (that you don't mind getting dirty).  If you'd like to carpool, or if you have any questions, please send me an email (emorrison@ufl.edu).  Snacks will be provided!

Help fund our trip to the SWS National Conference!

The wetlands club is heading to the Society of Wetland Scientist's National Conference!  Help send our student members to the meeting by donating here: https://www.gofundme.com/wetlands_club

Donations of any amount will be appreciated, and will be used to pay for a van rental, gas, and lodging.  After the meeting, the club will compile a report that will be given to all donors, so they can see how funds were spent, and what students learned at the meeting.

If you're a student and would like to attend the meeting with us, contact emorrison@ufl.edu

More information about the annual meeting can be found here: http://swsannualmeeting.org/

Also, our next meeting is tomorrow at 6pm in 1031 McCarty Hall D.  Come celebrate world wetlands day with a potluck and movie night!  See you there!
